Pike Fishing at its Wettest!!
few weeks back me and Henry Gilbey decided on having a piking mission on the exeter canal, It had been ages since Henry had chucked lures for pike so we couldnt wait!!
the weather forecast was horrible and Henry phoned me the day before just to check we were both mad enough to go out in this almost storm conditions!! it was horrible...... but we got up on the tues morning and the weather cleared, the forecast was still crap but for a few hours at least it looked ok-ish!!
we headed out at 7am to a fine weather start it was actually warm, but we knew it would end up getting a bit dodgey later on! it looked great for fishing and conditions couldnt be better, BUT the first few swims that normally produce a fair few decent fish didnt even produce a follow! we fished for a couple hours at the key side with nothing to show for our troubles, at least it was'nt raining yet......
Well things didnt improve at the first sections so we upped and moved to the Turf, personally my favorate pike area of all time, after being spotted by some of the local anglers we managed to escape from all the chit chat of anglers who reconised us, Henry was well impressed with the next few swims he got a aggresive chase on his first cast! things looked good, and hopefully he could get some decent stills for his website http://www.henry-gilbey.co.uk/ "check his blog!" instantly i had a big double chase me in right to my feet but i ran out of water the pike rolled over lookin for my lure, i cast again and smash, it hit me like a ton of bricks..... it was well aggresive and threw the hooks back in my face!! Henry then got another Jack chase him to the bank "how frustrating was this!!" we could see the pike but they just wouldnt hit the lures properly!! i had another 4-5 decent fish between 6-10lbs hit or chase the lures, then the weather came in!! we could see it coming up the Ex estuary like a wall of water...... it was a awsome sight. We headed upto the turf where instantly the rain smashed us we were getting hammered, it was horrible but we continued to plug away! i struck into a good pike, i couldnt really see it but Henry tells me he saw a fish around 15-16lb it was putting up a fight, but came off 3ft from the bank..... i was feeling down now, the elements were against us today, the next swim saw another fish well into the twentys follow me right to the bank but nothing it just looked at me and rolled away!! i looked at Henry and we both knew we had taken on more than we could chew!! poor old Jess (Henrys Dog) was soaked to the bone!! so we called it a day! we are currently sorting another trip out on the canal, but sooner rather than later we have some bass fishing to do......
